Title: Readers, Makers, Thinkers Programming
State Project Code: 18-06
Start Date: 07/01/2018
End Date: 09/30/2019
Abstract: The Lyon County Library’s goal is to transform the Yerington Branch into a “Family Place Library.” The "Family Place Libraries" initiative is a national model for transforming public libraries into welcoming, developmentally appropriate early learning environments for very young children, their parents, and caregivers. Core components of a Family Place Library include having specialized collections, spaces, and community partnerships that support early childhood development, parent education and engagement, and family support.
To help achieve this goal, the Yerington library’s children’s area was renovated, interactive/play based furniture was purchased, special STEM kits were added to the children’s collection, and a series of STEM workshops was held in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and the Yerington Paiute Tribe.

Our current space is now more suitable to sustain the open library area programming that we envisioned and we now have a more maker space friendly area for kids as well.

State Goal: Goal 3: Nevada libraries will provide responsive and accessible learning environments that meet the needs of all Nevada residents

Title: Children'a Area Rejuvenation
Narrative: To design the new children's space, we used storytime parents as a focus group to give feedback about what they wanted during their library usage. We learned from the parents’ focus group that they were eager for an enhanced space that facilitated their learning & teaching interactions with their children, using tools that they don't necessarily have at home. Items purchased for the children's room refresh include sensory Match other: Contract for telephone survey - $15,700
Fees for All Write Meeting - marketing - $65.00/hour@ 6.25 hours = $406.25. The parents were so excited to be a part of the planning that they really took ownership in the outcome and are devoted to the programming that is still ongoing.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: STEM Programs
Narrative: In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and the Yerigton Paiute Tribe, we purchased STEM kits and conducted 7 programs during the grant period in the newly refreshed Children’s space. Programs covered different STEM topics and intimately involved the parents. STEMtopicsincuded: Construction/building, robotics, drones, cooking, sewing, crochet, and knitting. We observed and surveyed parents after every program to evaluate success using Project Outcome to guide us.

By teaming up with the local Boys & Girls Club we not only broadened our reach of literacy and STEM programming, we solidified a long standing partnership to reach students that would not normally be able to come to library events. The Paiute Tribe youth had lost their previous community center, so we were able to foster a new partnership with this group.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The primary outcome for this project has been enhanced library programs for our community and the ability to better target new library services to under-served families in our very rural community. By providing a stimulating and creative environment that all ages can share, staff is now able to conduct programming with larger groups in a fun space and our local tribal youth are now using the library several times a week for tutoring and play. An uplifting, vibrant, happy space for all is the ultimate result that is now maximizing library space.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Yerington serves a migrant family population for half of the year and the number of children in both the Paiute Tribe youth and the Boys and Girls Clubs is around 550 kids age 3-17 (this number will increase in the summer months due to our migrant worker population). Through the space refresh, we can now accommodate the larger numbers that these groups bring into the branch.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The most important lesson we learned is do not plan a grant around a county facilities project. We were, in cooperation with this grant, going to be getting a library "refresh" where we empty the branch, get new paint and carpet and then put everything back in with a new fresh layout- hence the grant money supplementing what we could do to improve the programming space. However the facilities project never happened and kept being put off, so we essentially just redesigned the space ourselves with parent focus group input.
