General Information
Title: A Better Look into the Past through Microfilm
State Project Code: 18-01
Start Date: 07/01/2018
End Date: 06/30/2019
Abstract: For this project, the library replaced its malfunctioning and obsolete microfilm machine with a new microfilm reader that is easier to use, has the ability to create clear, high resolution images from the aging film, keeps up with technology expectations, and enables researchers to access information quickly and easily.

Boulder City Library's informal partner is the Boulder City-Hoover Dam Museum. The museum is sometimes an initial stop in the city when researchers are looking for historical records. The museum takes this opportunity to inform them of the additional resources located at the library.

State Goal: Goal 4: Build capacity of libraries to meet evolving information access needs.

Title: Microfilm Basic workshops
Narrative: The Boulder City Library offered three Microfilm Basics training presentations between December 2018 and February 2019 to highlight what microfilm is and how to use it including loading and unloading the microfilm, cropping images, saving images and printing. This type of activity did not entice many users to attend.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Title: Tech Teacher classes
Narrative: The Boulder City Library offered Tech Teacher classes twice a week to help patrons with any technology devices or software. A marketing campaign was implemented to notify the community about the new reader and the opportunity to learn how to use it one-on-one. We found there was lots more interest in the machine itself as patrons would sit at it on their own. We did not notice any struggles to understand how it worked.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Title: Microfilm Reader
Narrative: The Boulder City Library purchased an ST View Scan Universal 9MP Microfilm Digital Reader that included an 1 BMP color camera, software, and a service contract.
this equipment replaced an older scanner that malfunctioned, tore the microfilm, did not connect to printers or devices, was not intuitive or user friendly, and had reached end of life. Due to copyright concerns, digitization of the microfilm and microfiche collection was not a viable option to improve access.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Historians, researchers, and locals benefited by being able to more easily access the microfilm collection and thus more easily accomplish their research goals. In addition, by offering improved access to the library's historical collection of newspapers, the library was able to solifidifed informal partnerships with the Boulder City-Hoover Dam museum and local historical societies, confirming the library's role as an information and community research hub.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
We found that library users did not want to attend the formal training for the microfilm reader. We are learning that when it comes to technology, they will learn it as it is needed, and they prefer the one-on-one instruction. What we did not expect was for patrons to read about the new reader and while in the library browsing, stop to take a look at it and sit down to learn on their own. It is not intimidating like the older reader, but rather welcoming and easy to navigate for the user. One regular user, a member of the local 'historic preservation group, spoke for many when he stated it was great for researching historic Boulder City. For future projects, especially any related to technology learning, we will continue with offering the one-on-one teaching style. Many of our patrons are seniors and they seem to appreciate that. These classes are offered in 45 minute sessions that patrons can reserve 2 or 3 times a week where the building upon of information and the repetitive tasks make for easier learning.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The most significant lesson is to know who your population is and learn what they like in terms of how programs are presented. We offer many programs in a variety of ways and solicit feedback. Technology based learning has by far been one where seniors, who already feel insecure and anxious about it, would rather deal with it one-on-one. We believe this allows them to feel comfortable in asking questions and attempting to do on their own in order to understand the process.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
No
Explain:

Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
The Boulder City Library will continue to offer Tech Teacher (one-on-one) Technology classes on an ongoing bases. Technology is always being updated and we want our patrons to feel like they have somewhere to go to keep up with those changes.
