General Information
Title: Public Library Statistics
State Project Code: 18-17
Start Date: 07/01/2018
End Date: 06/30/2019
Abstract: NSLAPR subscribed to Baker and Taylor's Bibliostat Collect survey instrument for the purpose of collecting, evaluating, and reporting library data required by the Public Library Survey administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). All public libraries in the state used Bibliostat Collect to report their annual usage, revenue and expenditures, collection size and usage, and other statistics requested by IMLS. The submissions were reviewed by the NSLAPR library consultant in January and clarification was sought from the libraries as needed. The data set was then submitted to IMLS and all necessary corrections/clarifications were made before the deadline.

Libraries are required to complete the annual survey in order to be in compliance with the Minimum Public Library Standards for Nevada. Compliance is necessary in order for libraries to receive state or federal funding.

State Goal: Goal 1: Strengthen Nevada libraries' ability to effectively respond to community needs through training, planning, and assessment.

Title: Bibliostat Collect
Narrative: NSLAPR subscribed to Baker & Taylor's Bibliostat Collect instrument for collecting annual usage statistics from all Nevada public libraries. Public libraries are required by NRS and the Minimum Public Library Standards for Nevada to submit annual statistics, and the use of a tool such as Bibliostat Collect facilitates the process for the libraries as well as for State Library staff. The process would be much more cumbersome and time consuming for all concerned if such a tool was not used.

Intent: Improve library operations.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The annual data collected from the public libraries provides a measurement tool for libraries to use when comparing current library usage to past years or to peer libraries. The data is also used by State Library staff to analyze library usage and assist libraries in using the data for decision making and strategic planning.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Use of wireless access is increasing in public libraries, and use of public computers is decreasing. In order for libraries to show an accurate picture of the ways in which they are being used, they need to be able to accurately count the number of uses of wireless access. A survey of the public libraries showed that half the library systems do not have a way to count wireless use other than by doing a manual count which is inaccurate and likely results in under-counting.
