Title: Alfabetización digital para bibliotecarios del siglo XXI

Abstract:

A continuing education program was developed and offered to increase the skills in one or more components of the digital competence of 98 library teachers, mostly from the north-central region of Puerto Rico.  By implementing the project, participants were trained to identify and respond to the needs of users (students, teachers, professors and administrative staff) by applying various technological tools with the purpose of reducing the digital divide.  The training program curriculum was based on the definition of digital literacy of the American Library Association (ALA)and was based on the European Digital Competence Framework (Digi Comp 2.1),designed with the purpose of providing citizens with the tools, skills and attitudes necessary to live and work in an increasingly digital society.

The participation of the school librarians in the practical exercises that were done in the workshops and the motivation shown by them to implement what they learned was excellent. Some school librarians have already started using the material provided to offer workshops and prepare printed educational materials on the topics discussed to share with colleagues, teachers, parents and students. Although the workshops were aimed at school librarians in the north-central region, we had the participation of library teachers from other parts of the island who traveled to participate in them.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
It shows us the need that exists for this type of training in other regions, as well as the willingness and commitment of the school librarians to implement innovative projects in order to support their duty and benefit the population they serve. This is important because it validates the purpose established for the project and indicates the possible success that other similar projects may have in the future.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
School librarians require workshops that include information and skills relevant to their respective work areas including practical exercises that allow them to relate to the topics and then be able to use them as a reference in the application of the knowledge and skills acquired. Providing them with spaces to clarify their doubts, even after the conclusion of the workshop, is essential if we want the process to become a train-the-trainers strategy so that later they can use the material provided to carry the message to other colleagues in their schools and to students and parents of the school community.

As the didactic materials are already prepared, the effort in development and preparation will be less, it will require updating the content, if so needed. However, more effort and work will be incurred to promote the project. A new proposal for LSTA funds may be submitted to offer other librarians the opportunity to participate in this project.
