Abstract:

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) provided access to information and resources by supporting database collections and making them available to public and special libraries, K-12 schools, post-secondary institutions, and state employees. KDLA worked in partnership with the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL)—part of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education—to select and provide access to research databases for all Kentuckians through their local public libraries. KDLA also provided access to databases accessible to Kentucky state government employees to support their reference and research needs. KDLA also purchased a software license to OCLC EZProxy, which allows off-site users to log in to these databases using their State Library account.

Title: Electronic Resources -- Acquisitions
Narrative:

TheKentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) purchased 13 onlinedatabase collections for state government employee use. By partially fundingthe Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL), another 60 database collections were madeavailable to Kentuckians. KDLA also purchased the Ancestry Library Edition foruse by all KYVL members throughout the state. Proxy server software servicesfor user authentication (OCLC EZProxy) were also purchased. User authenticationallows State Library cardholders access to all the database collections.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to obtain and/or use information resources.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Kentuckians had access to a broad range of electronic resources through the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA), Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL), and public libraries throughout the state. These databases were used by 297 institutions, including two libraries that specifically service military families. KDLA database searches numbered 44,970. Users retrieved 16,741 full-text documents from KDLA databases. KYVL database searches numbered 82,473,627, and users retrieved 5,247,829 full-text searches.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Along with the KYVL databases, the supplemental KDLA databases available to Kentucky state employees provided an essential complement of authoritative research databases allowing the employees to complete the research tasks associated with their jobs. The KYVL databases, which are accessible to Kentucky citizens through the public library accounts of the participating libraries, form a core collection of research databases, without which citizens in counties with smaller annual operating budgets would not have access.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Our sharing of resources with KYVL makes it more efficient and cost-effective to provide quality online database subscriptions to a broad range of Kentucky residents.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
No
Explain:
KDLA is looking to add additional databases to our collection using LSTA funds to enhance the amount of information available to state employees. KDLA plans to increase marketing and training once these databases are acquired.
