Start Date: 02/01/2019
End Date: 08/15/2019
Abstract: Summer Library Program grants provide public and school libraries with additional funds to expand opportunities for children, teens and adults to improve their reading skills; summer learning experiences; and enhance opportunities to reach unserved summer populations.

Through this project, Daniel Boone Regional Library conducted a 10-week summer reading program targeting children, ages 0-5. Efforts included educating child care providers on the library's vast resources, the benefits of summer reading, and techniques that can be used to encourage the development of early literacy skills in the children in their care. Child care centers were encouraged to have their children participate in summer reading as a group through the use of Missouri Building Block kits featuring preschool book award nominees and a Universe of Stories Group Summer Reading Activity Booklet.  Additionally, the Library revised, printed and distributed its "Read Play Shine: All Year Round" literacy flip booklet. This booklet was provided to child care providers and the families they serve to strengthen early literacy practices in the home.

Title: Instructional Programs
Narrative: Daniel Boone Regional Library's (DBRL) Read, Shine, Play booklet was revised and printed. A Universe of Stories Group Summer Reading Activity Booklet was created and printed.

DBRL held 6 early literacy instructional programs through this grant.  These programs were workshops and educational sessions for child care providers The first program had 34 in attendance and was held at the main library branch, lasting 2 hours.  The second program was a series of 30 minute visits to 5 different child care centers to share information and resources on the library and summer reading. This program series had 150 child care providers in attendance.  These programs were promoted directly to child care provider locations within the library district.  Library staff shared information at each session about signing up groups to participate in a group summer reading program; the importance of early literacy; attendees were given the opportunity to checkout a Missouri Building Block Kit for use at their child care locations;A Universe of Stories Group Summer Reading 2019 Activity Booklets were distributed; and Read, Play, Shine booklets were provided for the caregivers to give to their families to encourage early literacy skill building at home.

Project staff created a DBRL Connections for Early Childhood Educators social media page for child care providers to join, which continued to provide summer reading support. Additionally DBRL has a child care educator e-newsletter which grew from 292 recipients in 2018 to 541 by August 2019.
Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Child care providers that attended the workshop were able to identify two things they would do differently in their daily work with children as a result of what they learned.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Introducing child care providers to library staff made the providers more comfortable reaching out the library for resources, as evidence by the data. The library has found that many of the staff at child care facilities need the library to come to them, as it is too difficult to get to the library, especially with groups. Many child care centers have limited resources, and the library can bridge the gap to provide those services and resources, as long as they are willing to meet the people where they are. As a result, this library system will focus on getting resources, training, services, and programs out to child care centers, rather then expecting staff and students at those centers to come to the library.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Personal connections are instrumental in getting library resources and programs out to those who cannot come to the physical library, whether it is in person, by phone, or having library staff drop by local centers to share information.
