General Information
Title: Boomers & Beyond: Aging Well @ PVLD
State Project Code: 40-8781
Start Date: 07/01/2017
End Date: 08/31/2018
Abstract: The Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) embarked on a nine month journey to provide programs for seniors on the Palos Verdes Peninsula aged 55 and older on topics of healthcare, wealth management, self-care, technology, and more in partnership with 12 other local organizations. These programs were held either on location at one of the three PVLD library locations, or offsite around the PV Peninsula. The goal of this project was to introduce the senior community on the PV Peninsula to new experiences and to educate them on a number of topics relevant to them specifically. The programs provided were a direct response to interests expressed by the community. A secondary goal of the project was to bring programs out to where the people are by providing programs in new locations offsite. We also hoped that patrons who attended these programs would create bonds and relationships with others who participated in our programs in an effort to help alleviate some isolation issues that seniors on the PV Peninsula face due to the remote and often unwalkable nature of the PV Peninsula.

Title: Informational and Awareness Presentations
Narrative: We hosted several information and awareness programs during the grant period that included presentations on health and wellness topics such as diabetes, heart health, healthy, cooking, Alzheimer's disease, researching reliable health information, brain and memory health, and cancer support as well as financial wellness. Several of these information presentations were offered by national organizations representing these topics, while others were offered by local community groups, and the Torrance Memorial Medical Center.
Intent: Improve users' ability to apply information that furthers their personal or family health & wellness.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
We did not anticipate how successful our exercise programs would be. We anticipated the exercise classes would pique the interest of our older adults as this would be a way for them to try something new (and possibly intimidating on their own), in a safe and familiar environment. We did not expect these programs would have the highest number of attendees and that they would cause a ripple effect in our neighboring communities.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
One of the stand out program successes was the Balance and Mobility, Fall Prevention program. This program was so popular that the second time we hosted it, we had to close the doors because we reached the maximum capacity for the room. Additionally, we were contacted by a representative from a neighboring city's fire department who wanted to observe the program, citing that slip and fall emergency calls were one of the most frequent calls the department received. They wanted to see if our program would be beneficial to bring to their city library. Since then, the neighboring city's library system has taken on a stronger interest in older adult health and wellness programming, and has invited us to participate in their health fair. We hope to work more collaboratively with our neighboring city systems to offer more of these types of programming opportunities to the communities that we share.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
One of the goals of this project was to offer programs outside of library locations in order to be more accessible to members of our community. We anticipated larger crowds for our offsite programs, though ultimately attendance at these programs was usually much lower than what we had at programs held on a library premise. We were told by some of our patrons and community members that it was difficult to find the new locations, or that they simply were not interested in exploring new locations. One benefit of hosting programs offsite was that the attendees those programs attracted tended to not be our regular patrons, and instead we were able to reach people in the community who had not previously been engaged with the library. While in the future we will explore continuing some activities offsite, at the moment, we are holding events at our library locations. Another lesson learned was that while our community and patrons did appreciate experiencing new things, such as chair yoga and tai chi, they really wanted the classes offered in a series. They appreciated the class but felt they would have gained more if the program was held on a more consistent and frequent basis. For that reason, as we continue some of these programs we are hosting them as 4- or 6-week series rather than one-off programs.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
No
Explain:

Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
Yes
Explain:
After completing the grant period programs, we took a look at the survey results and other feedback given to us by those who participated in the events. After evaluating the feedback, there are some programs we will continue to offer as a program series in order to expand on the initial success and offer more opportunities for our community to participate in, and there are other programs that we will not continue to offer due to lack of community interest and poor attendance.
