General Information
Title: Primary School 21st Century Digital Literacy Program
State Project Code:
Start Date: 11/15/2017
End Date: 09/30/2018
Abstract:

The project trained teachers on technology that can be used in their classrooms in a variety of ways and with a variety of subject matter. Robots for each grade level, Kindergarten to second, were acquired and professional development offered to all Primary School teachers. This allowed teachers to bring technology into their everyday teaching of academic standards.

All Primary School teachers were trained on use of the robots, given lesson planning time, and shared standards-based literacy and math lessons incorporating the robots into everyday lessons across grade levels.

Title: Professional Development
Narrative:

Staff professional development provided an introduction to coding and using robots in standards-based reading or math lessons. This was a hands-on experience to increase interest and excitement for further training with embedded planning time. Small groups of teachers received hands-on training that included for the creation of standards-based lessons that incorporated students coding the robots.

Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Title: Student Instruction
Narrative:

Students were taught coding and how to use the robots in a technology class. Three coding and eight hand-on lessons were taught, approximately one third of the lessons for the school year. After receiving basic coding and robot instruction, students transferred their knowledge into other curriculum areas. Students used robots in daily lessons, practicing coding while learning reading and math.

Staff signed out the library's "robot room" for 30-minute sessions. There are approximately 40 different lessons created for K-2 students were available for use.

Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
This project bridged a gap in coding and robotics at the elementary level. Before this project, the district only gave students in grades 3-12 coding and robotics experience.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
We provide K-2 students coding and robotics experiences. The intermediate technology teacher has noticed an improvement in student background knowledge.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
From staff feedback we learned that staff enjoyed the professional development and have made lessons that they're excited to use in their own classrooms. Students have opportunities to learn about coding and robots during technology instruction and then take what they have learned into their regular classrooms.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
First and second grade students have a basic background in coding and robot use. Each year students will grow and learn more ways to use coding and robotics both in technology class and other subjects at school. Student instruction will continue to be scaffolded and expand based on student growth.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
No
Explain:

Was an evaluation conducted for this project:
No
Was a final written evaluation report produced:
No
Can the final written evaluation report be shared publicly on the IMLS website:
No
Was the evaluation conducted by project staff (either SLAA or local library) or by a third-party evaluator:
Third-Party
What data collection tools were used for any report outcomes and outputs:
Did you collect any media for the data:
What types of methods were used to analyze collected data:
