Title: Independent Reading Level Assessment Curriculum Training
Narrative: The library trained teachers to use the Independent Reading Level Assessment (IRLA) framework. The program helped students who were not reading at grade level improve their reading speed, comprehension, and reading attention to reach grade level. Each K-12 classroom received an IRLA kit. The framework helped teachers establish a baseline proficiency level for each student, develop an action plan, and monitor progress towards individual reading goals. Use of IRLA helped at-risk students close achievement gaps in math and reading.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Establish a Computer Learning Lab
Narrative: Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig established a Learning Lab in the new high school library. The lab provided students access to print materials, audiobooks, interactive kiosks, tablets and computers. These resources complemented classroom instruction, extended learning beyond the classroom, and provided a means to educate parents who want to help their children achieve academic goals. With instruction from the Media Specialist, students gained experience with technology and digital media that help to express, create and connect their interests and gain 21st century skills.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Designing the library with a Native American focus, Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig created a place where students and community members can find what they want, feel comfortable, and want to return. When families are involved with their children's schools, children do better. Resources that expose students to reading and digital literacy enabled students to achieve academic goals.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The library has become a learning space that preserves and sustains Ojibwe heritage and cultures. It plays a major role in the development of a culture that promotes wider reading, motivated readers and lifelong learning skills.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The Media Specialist must identify areas of need and interest among teachers, students and parents to keep them connected to the library. When connected, the school library provides a range of opportunities for students to do independent work, use computers, equipment and research materials and serves as a community gathering place as well as a learning space.
