Start Date: 02/01/2018
End Date: 08/15/2018
Abstract: Summer Library Program grants provide public and school libraries with additional funds to expand opportunities for children, teens and adults to improve their reading skills; summer learning experiences; and enhance opportunities to reach unserved summer populations.

The St. Joseph Public Library conducted a nine-week summer reading program for all ages emphasizing the “Libraries Rock” theme to provide educational opportunities to local families throughout the summer. The Library offered summer programs that were accessible to a diverse range of individuals. Project staff encouraged children, teens, and adults to develop positive attitudes about reading, and they provided the community with opportunities to further their education and sense of discovery.

Title: Instructional Programs
Narrative: Project staff planned and implemented 139 interactive instructional programs centering on the theme Libraries Rock! There were story times and play times which incorporated stories, songs and crafts for young children. Elementary-aged children were provided dance instruction, readers' theater, art, video production, word play based on music, and make and take craft learning opportunities. The Library partnered with Second Harvest on a "No Hunger Summer" initiative to bring sack lunches into the community for children in need five days a week. Food was provided by Second Harvest while librarians offered reader's advisory, general library assistance and craft and activities for the children present. Children were provided with books to reinforce lessons learned and build home libraries. Teens experienced geology, art and music based programs. Adults participated in book discussions. Family instructional programs included movie and book programs, Sherlock Holmes Day, and ukulele instruction.

The programs were promoted through the library newsletter, email blasts, in-house flyers, word-of-mouth, social media outlets, press releases to traditional media outlets, personal invitations, text messages, news interviews, and bookmarks and brochures distributed through partners.
Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
There were 397 adults who participated in the reading program with 217 successful completions. There were 189 teens who participated in the reading program with 80 successful completions. There were 973 children who participated in the reading program with 543 successful completions. Participants were encouraged to read and learn throughout the summer months through access to materials and programming, and took advantage of the opportunity to do so. Research shows that children and teens who read during the summer months helped to reduce summer learning loss and were better prepared to resume school in the fall. Participants who attended programs increased their knowledge about the subject covered.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Texting teens through the Remind.com app was effective and as a result, the library hopes to incorporate more technology-based communications with patrons in the future.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The most successful programs and events offered adaptable programming components depending on user skill levels or prior knowledge of the activity.
