Abstract:


The TBLC regional continuing education program provided a multi-layered approach to continuing education offerings for the libraries in our service region in the 2016-17 grant year.  This included traditional face-to-face and online workshops, recordings of previously offered workshops, outreach and community building, presentations at staff development days, trendspotting and content curation via our social media channels and website, content creation with our video production program and mini-conferences.

Activity Details
Title: Provide professional and personal development workshops and training
Narrative:

The libraries in the TBLC service region looked to TBLC to provide a full range of continuing education opportunities for all library staff. The largest part of the curriculum centered around formal training sessions, both in-person and online. The in-person sessions ranged from whole and half-day targeted training with an experienced trainer to full-day mini-conference style events.

TBLC’s online training, designed to complement the introductory training offered by Florida Library Webinars, consisted of small group, interactive sessions often held in two-part sessions to offer additional time to delve into topics. TBLC also provided an extensive collection of on-demand training in the form of recordings of online sessions taught live and recorded and made available for use afterwards.

With the implementation of Florida Library Webinars, TBLC rethought and redesigned its regional training program to focus on more personal, interactive opportunities for library staff in our region to learn, network and collaborate with TBLC and with other staff in the region.The extensive introductory training offered by Florida Library Webinars enabled TBLC to focus more on individual connections with library staff and on the development of one-day mini-conference events knowing that the broad-scope general training component has been provided.

Activity Details
Title: Provide mini-conference events to enrich professional and personal development
Narrative:

The Innovators and Risk-Takers was the first of our new “Experience” model for mini-conferences, which was adapted from our last Moving On Up conference. This Experience incorporates the traditional presentations with hands-on learning and activities to actively practice what is being discussed. Innovators and Risk-Takers, held on March 22, focused on actively taking risks and moving outside your comfort zone to innovate in libraries. Lindsay Sarin shared information about changes in the University of Maryland’s School of Information to encourage more diverse skillsets in their graduate students; Kimberly Matthews spoke about the types of innovators and ways to encourage them; a panel of innovators and their supervisors from Pasco and Hillsborough shared their journeys; and the entire day was woven with a design-thinking activity lead by Brenda Hough. Forty-three participants joined us for this exciting and thought-provoking day. 
 
This year’s Library MakerFest found itself in a new building at the Strawberry Festival fairgrounds where the ceiling was taller, the booths weren’t as cramped, and a separate room was provided for the breakout-style training sessions that were held throughout the day. Of the 25 booths, 8 were located on “Maker’s Row” where attendees could make and take a project home with them with the instruction from the libraries providing the material. The breakout room presentations included a visit from Jason Evans Groth, a librarian from the North Carolina State University, who spoke about music in makerspaces. Three presentations by various speakers were held throughout the day. Sixteen libraries were involved in staffing booths, and the entire day saw 167 attendees. 
 
Hurricane Irma caused this year’s VIP Conference to be rescheduled until the next fiscal year. So, all of the preparations that were made to be held at the University of South Florida’s Student Marshall Center on September 13 will now be executed on December 18 including the original plans for all speakers and session topics. The theme will remain THE SHIFT, and TBLC will provide a variety of presentations geared toward paraprofessionals about how libraries’ focus is shifting toward education and programming.

Activity Details
Title: Outreach and Community Building
Narrative: A total of 61 community and outreach events were held throughout the October 2016 - September 2017 period. These included staff development days, recording sessions and library visits. TBLC hosted a booth at the 2016 FLA Annual Conference that featured each of our large programs which were represented by a color. Visitors to the booth then had the opportunity to create paper flowers in the color of the service they’ve used and add that flower to TBLC's color backdrop. The booth was so successful and interactive that TBLC was given the Best Exhibitor Booth Award. Three group meetings were conducted with 23 total in attendance.

Title: Content Creation through Video Production
Narrative:

TBLC's video content production program filmed and produced 78 new videos in the October 2016 to September 2017 period. TBLC staff initiated a new feature called "Librarians in Cars Getting Coffee" and have filmed four installments, two of them featuring Gene Coppola from the Palm Harbor Library and Lois Eannel from the East Lake Community Library. A new tech video feature was introduced and the first video focused on a recent update to Instagram. This video was viewed 46 times in its first month.

Narrative:

A new Member Services Coordinator was hired in December 2016 and has resumed the work of using social media to promote TBLC programs and services, highlight happenings in our member libraries and the library community in general.

TBLC held 27 live events for 586 attendees including 16 face-to-face workshops, one annual meeting, three group meetings, two mini-conferences and five online workshops. The outreach program provided 61 events for a total of 2,012 participants. There were 81 videos produced by the video production program. These were viewed 8,160 times during the year. In total, TBLC’s Continuing Education Program reached 10,735 people.
