Abstract: The Grantsburg Public Library used a LSTA grant to develop family friendly kits centered around engineering, technology, and creative expression. There are ten kits in all, each kit contains some type of container, a tote or a box, a label, and a barcode so the kits can be checked out to people in the library. Many of the kits are different types of building "toys" like Legos, K'nex and Snap Circuit. Another kit is a loosely organized art kit. Three of the kits are sewing boxes, a staff member has developed three different sewing projects for children to complete in a short amount of time. There is also a videography kit, complete with a green screen and ipad for filming. The target audience for these kits was to be children ages 8 to 12, but in reality, the people that have ended up using the kits range from ages 3-45. Young children enjoy playing with the building activity kits and the older kids like to do the sewing and video projects. As a result of having the kits available for check-out within the library families are now coming into the library with the intention of spending a few hours trying out the different activities. When the kids use the kits they (and parents too) learn new skills like sewing, operating a remote control, thinking about green power sources when they playing with the snap circuits green energy kit and learning how green screen technology works.

Title: Purchased the tools and equipment to assemble ten makerspace kits.
Narrative: Before any procurements were made I meet with Webster Public Schools media specialist, Carissa Kammeyer. Kammeyer demonstrated the tools and shared with me what was working in her school with her students best. She also warned us off a few maker space gadgets. We also discussed organization and tracking usage. After meeting I purchased items online and went to many stores for the kit supplies

The library created an area within the library todisplay the kits. The library director made space on existing shelvesfor the ten kits.

The library director presented a policy to lend and preserve the kits. The library board approved the policy. Library board of trustees developed a written policy inregards to the use, intent and procedures necessaryfor sharing the kits.

The library purchased consumables necessary forSTEAMpacs. After assembling and testing the materials in the kitstaff deemed out was necessary to have on hand forthe kits; batteries, screw drivers, instructions, projectideas.

Library staff meet weekly to discuss ideas, observations and share insights throughout theduration of the project. Library staff meet informally to discuss the use of thekits, how they had witnessed individuals using thekits and if the kits needed more supplies.

Intent: Improve library's physical and technology infrastructure.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
At our library we developed engineering and technology kits called STEAMpacs. Each kit is made up of resources and tools used to explore STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) topics. The intended outcome for area youth is to grow the knowledge of STEAM expertise. Behavior of afterschool preteen guests at the library will be redirected into fun and educational opportunities. The measureable outcome for young audiences will be more STEAM opportunities outside of school, outreach into the school and community and circulation statistics of STEAMpacs.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
I will definitely continue this project! Now that we have the kits our community would be upset if the resources went away. They count on having these educational resources at our library. A group of home school families come in monthly to discuss STEAM education and then afterward each family checks out a kit and continues the STEAM education. Children come weekly after school to complete video and sewing projects. However, we could use more kits. I'm actually hoping to invest in more kits at some point.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Libraries in small communities need to invest in tools for their community members to use at the library location. This is our first venture in providing educational resources for people to use in house and people are excited to have these resources! People appreciate having something more to do with their families in our little town. It's also a benefit that the STEAMpacs are available at all times the library is open.
