General Information
Title: Bully Free Zone
State Project Code: 16-01
Start Date: 07/01/2016
End Date: 06/30/2017
Abstract: In partnership with Susan Keema, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services Department with the Carson City School District, we enlisted Brian Williams of Think Kindness (http://www.thinkkindness.org/) to provide 4 presentations to promote social and emotional wellness and positivity.

In support of the presentations, we asked the community to participate in a community kindness activity that involved graph paper and sticky notes. Participants wrote down random acts, words, or pictures that promote kindness on a sticky and placed it on a poster sized graph paper. The presentations were well attended and received, as documented in surveys provided by school administrators, teachers, students, and community responses.
Additionally, we collaborated with Carson City School District (CCSD) Social Workers, English Language Arts Facilitators, Librarians, and Counselors to identify materials for a library collection to promote social and emotional wellness. The materials were identified, ordered, cataloged, and circulated throughout 9 CCSD school libraries on a monthly rotation. The materials came back to the library as of June 2016 and have been circulating to the public ever since.

State Goal: Goal II: Encourage Nevada libraries to develop and use partnerships and collaboration to maximize user resources and services throughout the state.

Title: Bully Free Zone Boxes
Narrative: In partnership with the Carson City School District head librarian, we created Bully Free Zone boxes with age appropriate materials for elementary, middle, and high school students. These box were sent to each school for their library to display and provide to students and faculty for circulation for 5 months.
The total circulation while at the school library's was 32. (It is assumed that the circulation at the schools was higher than reported because they did not track in house use to include staff and students utilizing the materials in the schools and school libraries.)
Total circulation at the Carson City Library has been 425.
The materials returned to the Carson City School District in June 2017 to circulate to the public. They were displayed to promote Bully Free Zone efforts.
Intent: Improve users' ability to converse in community conversations around topics of concern.

Title: Think Kindness Programs
Narrative: Brian Williams of Think Kindness (http://www.thinkkindness.org/) was recruited to provide 4 presentation to encourage positive relationships, social and emotional well being, and promote a bully free community in support of the Bully Free Zone project.
Think Kindness is an organization that goes into schools and communities to promote kindness. The presentations were held to inform youth community members of the importance of standing up against bullying and the importance of being kind. Additionally, the presentations demonstrate ways to be kind.
These presentations were in partnership with the Carson City School District's Educational Services Department to support state and local initiatives to promote Bully Free Zones in our schools and community.

Anti-Bullying Presentation #1 (Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) student population 400: November 7, 2016)
Anti-Bullying Presentation #2 (Carson Middle School (CMS) student population 700: November 8, 2016)
Anti-Bullying Presentation #3 (Carson High School (CHS) student population 1,000: November 9, 2016)
Anti-Bullying Presentation #4 (Library Elementary Family Night at the Community Center 180: November 9, 2016)

Consultation with Brian Williams consisted of emails and phone calls for approximately 2 months leading up to the presentations. These communications were for the purpose of planning and ensuring that the presentations met the school district and library's goals to promote a Bully Free Zone.
We created a survey to administer after the Bully Free Zone presentations to assess the value and reach that they provided to participants. Overall, we wanted to assess the impact, if participants learned about bullying, and if they would attend another presentation on bullying. The surveys were provided on paper and electronically. We printed approximately 250 paper surveys and had 6 iPads available for survey participants. Additionally, school participants were emailed the survey link to participate. No additional costs were occurred during this planning phase.

Intent: Improve users' ability to converse in community conversations around topics of concern.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
The goal of the Bully Free Zone project was to provide youth and families in our community with resources through presentations and materials. By providing 4 presentations, 3 to local schools and 1 event public event, we were able to reach a large portion of our community. The presentation attendance follows (approximate based on student registration numbers, absences are not factored): EVMS-400, CMS-700, CHS-1,000, public-180. Some responses to the presentation follow. "Bullying is something that goes around everywhere. All we can do is hope that this generation is more full of kindness then the last. Bullying isn't ok and shouldn't be stopped with violence but with care and helpfulness. This generation needs to change the continuous cycle and make anew." -Community Member "Thank you "kindly"! You have ignited kindness ideas in my 7 year old!" -Parent "I like the presentation because it taught me knew things about how kindness can be cool." -Student "Bullying should be a more important topic to because I am oblivious to it. I will try to spread this kindness explosion as far as I can." -Student 87% noted "yes" to "Would you participate in another presentation on preventing bullying?" 90% noted "yes" to "Do you have a better understanding of bullying?"
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The materials that were circulated through the 9 school libraries were well received and regarded by school officials. One Social Worker requested the books to circulate for the 2017-2018 school year; "Are you going to send the round of bully free books again? I hope you are because I loved them!" Another school official noted, "Thank you for supporting our schools!" Each school library designated a special section//display for the bully free books for teachers and students to check out. The total circulation while at the schools was 32.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
The circulation of materials at CCSD schools could have been simplified for their head librarian. She re cataloged all of the Bully Free Zone materials into their integrated library system (ILS) to circulate through their schools. We could have set another library location in our ILS for them to gather the circulation statistics, which would have save them time.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort in managing this project:
Yes
Explain:
The Bully Free Zone materials are labeled as Bully Free Zone materials and continue to circulate at the Carson City Library. We will highlight the material collection intermittently on library displays. Additionally, school officials have been made aware that they can check out any of these materials for use in their schools.
Do you anticipate changing the types of activities and objectives addressed by the project:
No
