Title: Website Development
State Project Code: 163211
Start Date: 10/01/2015
End Date: 09/30/2017
Abstract:

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) provided website templates, hosting services, and software training for library and literacy organization managers. These small organizations were able to have a presence on the World Wide Web because of the support and funding from this project. The project lead officer created one new website during the grant period, for a total of forty-nine websites housed in the program. ODL required one or two library/literacy staff members to attend a two-day course to learn the website editing software. ODL subscribed to a book-display widget for libraries to use on their websites. Participants were surveyed to find out what they had gained from taking the classes and how it helped them improve their websites. The lead officer also worked with a developer to upgrade and modernize the two existing WordPress themes. In addition, they produced two new WordPress themes to offer as options to program participants.

Title: Website Creation
Narrative: The Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) project lead officer created a website for one public library using WordPress, a popular cloud-based Content Management System. The participant chose a theme and the project lead officer imported content, text, images and links into the website. During the grant period, the project lead officer worked with a developer to have the existing themes updated. It was determined that mobile responsiveness, accessibility features, and the overall display of the existing themes could be improved. The existing themes were created in 2013 and were showing signs of age. In addition, the developer created two new themes to be offered as options. The new themes were created with a higher standard of accessibility, more functionality, and more color options in mind. ODL aims to have an eye toward the future with each improvement. The web developer introduced a page-builder (brand name: Beaver Builder). The Page Builder is a flexible design system that allows for front-end drag and dropping of rows, columns, layouts and modules.  Future improvements will be much more easily implemented.

Title: WordPress Classes
Narrative:

Participating libraries sent one to two staff members, in most cases the library director, to training at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL).  The ODL project lead officer had built and customized the basic framework for each website. During class, each participant put the finishing touches on their website with text, images and links. ODL made the website available through the World Wide Web. The training was lecture and hands-on learning.

Forty-two individuals received website training. There were ten training sessions offered; each a two-day class held from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm with four hours and forty minutes of instruction and one hour and fifty minutes set aside for lunch and breaks.

When asked if having a website had increased delivery of library services, fifty-two percent of participants strongly agreed and forty-one percent agreed.  None disagreed.

When asked if a website had increased user frequency, thirty-four percent strongly agreed and fifty-two agreed.  None disagreed.

Participants were asked to give examples of how their library website had helped their libraries.

Here are samples of participant comments taken from class exit evaluations:

"Our students and volunteers find us through our website."

"Recently a young woman moved to our community and found our website. She knew what she needed and brought the appropriate forms of I.D. to get a library card. She had already looked on our online catalog and decided what she wanted to checkout. She was impressed with our library and said she was excited that she was able to be so prepared."

"I have a better knowledge of our website and how to use it so I'm more able to help patrons."

"Patrons express appreciation of the notification of upcoming events on our website, as well as access from the site to our catalog and our eBook system."

"Love having the calendar available to them."

"We post all our library events, classes and news on our website, it's how our patrons keep themselves in the loop."

"The information is presented with an 'at-a 'glance' look that doesn't require them to search extensively. Visual cues (pictures) helps to find info easily."

"We have had several patron comments about how great the website looks. It is easy to locate information."

"It helps inform the public of the programs and opportunities the library provides to the public."

"Patrons contact us through the email link from the website with e-book, reference and genealogy requests."

"One day we found an article in the newspaper about the library that we hadn't sent in. The editor had gone to our website to get it!"

'The WordPress sites are easy to use! The training helped to make us real experts at updating our content."

"Our program participation has increased."

"A patron recently saw information about a Diabetes Empowerment Education Program that was posted on our website. They had been searching for such a program to help them understand and control their diabetes. Attending the classes has helped them do so."

"Many patrons have told me they enjoy reading our monthly newsletters, which are posted on our website. Also they find it easy to access Digital Prairie from our homepage."

Participants were asked how they thought their community of users had benefitted from the library's web presence.

"They have benefited with the information provided such as programs offered, location, and tutor trainings."

"They are able to use our online catalog to see if we have books they are looking for. They can get pertinent information about hours and policies as well as get information on how to access ebooks."

"It is a vibrant one-stop online shop for our services. Our customers are able to easily find information about the library and contact us through the website."

"The community is able to keep abreast of programs and services we offer that of interest to them."

"They are able to view fresh content, find out about upcoming events and easily access data bases."

"They have access to many things that we couldn't provide without a website. We can use it to fully describe events that Facebook only allows us to briefly name. They are able to go to the calendar to look for upcoming events as well as find curated websites in one easy-to-use place."

"Our website is professional and crisp. As a nonprofit, the library hosting has been invaluable by providing us with a presence we might not otherwise be able to afford."

"Mostly through easy access to Digital Prairie as well as advertising for book sale and summer reading activities."

Title: WordPress Refresher Open Lab
Narrative:
Website Development participants had an opportunity to refresh their knowledge and to continue work on their WordPress websites. The trainer addressed any knowledge gaps or questions they had after completing the introductory class and spent class time reviewing website or WordPress topics chosen by participants. The trainer was able to give focused, individual attention to each student.

Thirteen individuals attended the refresher training. This one-day lab workshop was held from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm with no set time for lunch or breaks.

Comments from students:

Title: OK Connect Website Maintenance
Narrative:

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) maintained the OKConnect.org website. The website represents the libraries across the state that offer videoconferencing capabilities to the public. The website makes it easy to locate these libraries through a map and offers other information related to the OK Connect project goals such as education, health, business and government resources. The website required critical security updates. An outside Drupal professional was hired to complete the  maintenance.

Intent: Improve users’ ability to discover information resources.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Websites were evaluated for how frequently librarians were posting and how recently the content had been updated. About twenty percent of participants had numerous recent posts. Forty-six percent comprised the middle group of medium to light posting. Finally, there were the librarians who updated little or not at all. This group made up thirty-four percent of all program participants. The participants were posting on an interesting array of topics, including: books sales, family events, tax help, summer reading, winter reading, movies in the park, book clubs, community initiatives, mine craft, bake sales, fitness & health events, author visits, new books, staff picks, story times, board meetings, tech night, writing workshops, Lego club, youth art classes, book talks, online resource promotions, fit kids programs, Federal Student Aid workshops, gaming, read to a dog, home-school programs, maker space for all ages, Spanish classes, quilting, trivia nights, free drivers' ed, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math programs, social media for your business, tech for kids, job and career help, safety and social media, workforce development tools, and senior programs.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
Maintaining accessibility is still a problem. The Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) plans on re-addressing the importance and legalities of making content accessible to all individuals. ODL plans to write an agreement, which will include a 508 compliance checklist, for participants to agree to give best effort toward complying.
Explain one or two of the most significant lessons learned for others wanting to adopt any facets of this project:
Most Website Development participants are using their websites and the program remains a good way for libraries to maintain a web presence. The addition of the Page Builder system to the WordPress platform will contribute to the ongoing success and viability of the program.
