Title: Racing to Read Story Time Plus
State Project Code: 2016-LFL5-RTRC5CN5-8170
Start Date: 12/01/2015
End Date: 05/31/2016
Abstract: Racing to Read Story Time Plus grants are designed to encourage more Missouri libraries to expand their early literacy efforts in order to help preschoolers be ready to read and to learn when they start kindergarten. Library staffs were required to integrate the knowledge and skills taught in the Early Literacy Fundamentals webcast into the early literacy services provided by the library.

The Puxico Public Library added early literacy books and educational DVDs to the circulating collection; improved its early literacy area by adding puppets, blocks, magnetic letters and numbers, preschool readiness toys, and an activity table; and modeled skill building techniques at an early literacy event and provided informational bookmarks and books to families in attendance to build home collections.

Title: Instruction - Programs
Narrative: The Puxico Public Library provided a program at the local Heart Start. Early literacy skill development techniques were modeled for parents and other caregivers. Each family was given informational bookmarks and books to add to their home collections to practice the skills learned.

A similar early literacy program was planned to be held at the library, but no one attended.

Events were promoted by flyers, a press release and word of mouth.
Intent: Improve users' formal education.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
Parents and other caregivers have access to 73 books to help children ages 0-6 develop early literacy skills. The items circulated 3 times during the grant period. Parents and caregivers also have access to 23 DVDs that promote early literacy, which circulated 3 times as well. The library staff observed that most parents and caregivers that attended the early literacy event at Head Start kept coming back to the library to checkout new books. There were 7 surveys completed by the Head Start session attendees, recording the following responses: 6 share books and tell stories with their children daily and 1 often; 5 sing and say rhymes with their children daily and 2 often; and 4 sometimes visit the library while 3 rarely or never visit the library.
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children had access to resources to support their early literacy skill development and took advantage of the opportunity to use them. Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children who used the materials and participated in the early literacy program likely built early literacy skills needed to learn to read successfully. The public library is in a better position to provide effective early literacy services.
What methods did you use to determine your findings? Check all that apply:
Survey
Review of Administrative Data
Based on outputs, outcomes and/or other results, explain any significant lessons learned from these findings for either the SLAA or others in the LIS field:
Improving the early literacy resources and programming at the library helped increase engagement from children and parents both during story time and in the library in general.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort:
Yes: The books and early literacy manipulatives purchased through the grant will remain in use until they are either discarded or replaced. The library will continue to provide early literacy services and programs as time and funding permit.
Do you anticipate any change in the project's scope:
No
Do you anticipate any other changes in the project:
