General Information
Title: Interactive Children's Area at the Clifton Public Library
State Project Code: 2015-0260-13
Start Date: 05/20/2015
End Date: 08/01/2016
Abstract: The Clifton Public Library created a family-friendly early learning area. This area is a comfortable and easy to use interactive space that includes story times, toys and materials that encourage early literacy learning activities. Parents and caregivers learn the importance of their role as their child’s first teacher. Children benefit from research based practices that help them develop skills needed for lifelong learning and literacy. The community benefits because families interact within the library environment and see the library as a valuable resource for early literacy learning. This project relates to the library’s mission by fostering an environment which promotes literacy.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important outcomes or findings not previously reported:
Library staff informal survey before creation of the early literacy area found that 59% participants were satisfied with children’s area. Observations revealed that books were hard to find, the area is crowded and not much to do. No families were using the area. After creation of the area, 100% are satisfied with it. Observations reveal books are easier to find, patrons like the number and variety of books. The area is bright, colorful and welcoming. There are a lot of activities for parent/child interaction including Brain Boxes. The Early Literacy Enhanced Story Time is fun and engaging. Parents have commented they like the format and being included in the activities. There are a lot of families using the library since the children’s area was renovated.
Please briefly describe the importance of these outcomes and findings for future program planning:
The public school and only preschool in town were closed at the end of the school year 2014. There is no plan to reopen. Because of LSTA funding parents and their children will be encouraged to read and inspired to increase their literacy skills.
