General Information
Title: Summer Reading
State Project Code:
Start Date: 10/01/2014
End Date: 09/30/2016
Abstract: The CT State Library offered training, programmatic support, and tracking software to encourage librarians to implement summer reading programs in their libraries. Summer reading programs encourage children and young adults to read and to maintain or improve their reading skills during the summer break, thereby readying them for the next school year. The State Library participates in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) to give Connecticut public libraries access to affordable, high quality Summer Reading materials, which include both promotional items (bookmarks, posters, etc.) and programming resources.

Title: CSLP training and manuals
Narrative: The State Library's Children's Consultant held an all-day workshop for young adult librarians to encourage rethinking summer reading programs. The workshop included an overview of adolescent reading research, delivered by a nationally known specialist. Also included were talks on setting research-based goals and rethinking incentives when designing summer reading programs for teens. During this workshop, the instructors distributed summer program manuals to libraries that completed the prior year's annual summer reading survey. The manuals included materials on the year's themes: "On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!" (children) and "Get in the game. Read!" (teens).

Title: Evanced training
Narrative: The CT State Library provides free access for public libraries to use Evanced Solutions Summer Reader software. The State Library's Children's Consultant held four live training opportunities to teach Connecticut librarians how to use the summer reading tracking software. During these sessions, she distributed summer program manuals to libraries that completed the prior year's annual summer reading survey. The manuals included materials on the year's themes: "On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!" (children) and "Get in the game. Read!" (teens).

Title: Evanced software
Narrative: The CT State Library provides free access for public libraries to use Evanced Solutions Summer Reader software. This online option for tracking summer reading can connect with young patrons who might never visit the library, engage children who have no interest in traditional programs, promote communication between the library and participants through the Summer Reader portal, and relieve library staff of clerical duties, freeing time to work directly with children to promote reading. All of these activities support a basic goal of Summer Library Programs – to encourage reading during the summer.

This was the first year of a new three-year contract for Evanced Summer Reader software. The State Library chose Evanced software because it gave the most leeway for individual libraries to customize the program, which was a significant consideration in getting libraries to participate. Participants could report either the number of books read, the number of pages read, or the number of minutes spent reading.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
74 libraries used Evanced Summer Reader or Wandoo Reader software to track their statistics. 142 libraries reported having a summer program for children, 122 libraries reported having a summer program for young adults, and 84 libraries reported adult summer reading. 120 libraries used CSLP for their children's program, 92 libraries used CSLP for their young adult program, and 48 libraries used CSLP for their adult program. Children in 75 programs counting books logged 419,525 books read, children in 42 programs counting minutes logged 11,488,766 minutes of reading, and children in 3 programs counting pages logged 972,235 pages read. Teens in 70 teen programs counting books logged 50,420 books read, teens in 22 teen programs counting minutes logged 8,736,366 minutes of reading, and teens in 5 teen programs counting pages logged 991,452 pages read. Adults in 55 adult programs counting books logged 44,282 books read, adults in 5 adult programs counting minutes logged 273,774 minutes of reading, and adults in 3 adult programs counting pages logged 234,681 pages read. In the 133 libraries reporting children's participation numbers, 62,392 children participated in their summer reading programs. In the 106 libraries reporting participation numbers for teens, 14,726 teens participated. In the 76 libraries reporting participation numbers for adults, 9,458 adults participated.
