Start Date: 07/01/2015
End Date: 06/30/2016
Abstract: The Missouri Digital Heritage initiative (MDH) provides a web portal for indexed keyword search and retrieval of Dublin Core metadata and a wide variety of digitized historical materials, including newspapers, photos, correspondence, books, and audio and video files. This is a joint project of the State Library, the State Archives and the State Historical Society of Missouri. Statewide efforts on MDH continue to include content recruitment for the project; partnership development to encourage efficient and effective regional projects; assistance to cultural heritage institutions to format and upload their digital collections, technical support for users of the CONTENTdm image management software, developing the MDH website, designing landing pages and creating custom queries; and updating standards and best practices for digital scanning, metadata creation, and web delivery of Missouri’s digital collections. The State Library uses the CONTENTdm image management software to support the MDH program.

Title: Content - Search and Retrieval
Narrative: LSTA grants funds are used to provide search and retrieval access to approximately seven million items available through Missouri Digital Heritage. Several digital collections were added to the database during this year: Unity Library and Archives, affiliated with the religious nonprofit Unity World Headquarters, contributed a collection of photographs and records from Unity Farm; the Museum of Missouri Military History contributed a collection of records focusing on Charles Lindbergh's solo Atlantic flight and service in the Missouri National Guard; the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site contributed a bound volume chronicling steamboat activity in the trading hub of Lexington, MO in the mid-19th century; and the Perry County Historical Society contributed a collection of glass plate negatives from Perryville and Perry County in the early 20th century.

Currently, seven grant projects are in progress: a project digitizing historic photographs and negatives from Springfield and the Ozark region, by Springfield-Greene County Library, in collaboration with the News-Leader Media Group; a project digitizing documents related to John Mason Peck, a Baptist missionary and abolitionist, by St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri – St. Louis; a project digitizing materials from the "interwar period" in the Kansas City region, by Kansas City Public Library; a project digitizing photographs and documents of Lincoln University from 1871 to the 1990s, by Inman E. Page Library, Lincoln University; and three other newspaper digitization projects by Gentry County Library, Shelbina Carnegie Public Library, and St. Joseph Public Library, in collaboration with the State Historical Society.

The Missouri State Archives added a collection of digitized volumes recording laws passed by the Missouri General Assembly from 1824 through the present day, as well as a a collection of materials related to disasters throughout Missouri's history.
Intent: Improve users’ ability to discover information resources.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
The number of items accessible through the Missouri Digital Heritage grew to over 7 million, with the addition of eight special collections. Between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016, the Missouri Digital Heritage website had 228,536 sessions completed by 170,317 users accessing 824,179 page views. Targeted educational and cultural heritage institutions and Missourians in general became more aware of Missouri’s contribution to the World War 1 effort. Regional partnerships built during past Civil War projects were used to develop the statewide World War 1 project and to carry out several digital newspaper projects based on national standards and best practices.
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
The Missouri Digital Heritage project continued to incorporate digital collections of text, images and newspapers into its database and provided access to these collections via a Web-based search interface.
