Title: RoboticTraining for Librarians
Narrative: Laura O'Grady, Youth Services Librarian at Martin Memorial Library, was hired to provide 6 hours of training to the 15 library staff who would facilitate the sessions of the Robotics Club.  The training session started with an overview of the Lego Robotics Kit, which includes the Lego building blocks, the sensors, and the computer brick.  The second part of the session dealt with programming the computer brick using the touch, color, ultrasonic and gyro sensors. The third part of the session covered writing the computer programs with the EV3 software to make the robot follow various commands.  The final session of the program was a hands-on session on actually assembling the Lego Robot.

Title: Robotics Clubs Program
Narrative: The eight libraries scheduled the Robotics Clubs program, which consisted of five sessions based on the robot and the sensors.  The sensors used  during the program were: Touch, Color, Ultrasonic and Gyro.  The audience for the Robotics Club program was children 10  to 14 years old in the service areas of eight System libraries.  A total of 40 session were offered in the eight libraries with a total of  206 children attending the sessions.

Twenty sets of  Lego Mindstorms EV3 sets and 20 laptop computers were purchased. The twenty sets were  divided into four kits consisting of the 5 EV3 sets and five laptops. The Mindstroms EV3 software was loaded onto the laptops for participants to build a computer program to solve a specific session problem.  The participant then downloaded the program onto the robot to test and evaluate the program to see if the robot could solve the problem for that session.

Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Title: Evaluation
Narrative: The final part of the program was the evaluation of each program which the librarians completed.  The evaluation method used was observation. Through observation, the librarian facilitating the program, estimated the percentage change from session to session for four variables: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Curiosity  and Team Work.
Intent: Improve users' general knowledge and skills.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
An average of 55% increase in the Creativity of all participants in the program An average of 58% increase in Critical Thinking of all participants in the program. An average of 48% increase in Curiosity of all the participants in the program An average of 40% increase in Team Work of all the participants in the program 100% of participants indicated they would recommend the program to a friend.
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
Creativity is a skill necessary for success in the 21st century Being able to systematic solve problems is a necessary life skill Curiosity leads to new discoveries and the pursuit of learning Being able and willing to work on a team is a necessary life skill. Indication of very high satisfaction with the program
What methods did you use to determine your findings? Check all that apply:
Survey
Participant Observation
Based on outputs, outcomes and/or other results, explain any significant lessons learned from these findings for either the SLAA or others in the LIS field:
Never underestimate what a kid can accomplish Kids do not need an instruction booklet Librarians need more training in the observation method of evaluation
