Abstract:

The 2015 Summer Reading Program provided librarians across the state with a manual that includes quality program ideas, artwork by a known illustrator and training to increase library staff’s ability to reach more children and teens and provide high quality programs. The project provided training for staff, CSLP manuals, funds for outreach for the program and a statewide contract for online summer reading software.


State Goal: Create opportunities for libraries to enhance their capacity to provide 21st Century resources, services and programs to their communities.

Title: Manuals and training
Narrative: Every public library received a copy of the Collaborative Summer Library Program manual and artwork.  All libraries were invited to send staff to the six trainings held across the state.  370 of the 450 state-aided libraries sent at least one representative.

List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
440 Libraries reached out to at least one organization that provides group summer programs. 95% of library staff who attended a training reported learning at least 2 ideas they could take back and implement in their library. 60% of staff who attended training learned about the Summer Food program for the first time.
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
The number of children participating in summer reading increased by over 50,000 due to outreach activities. That staff said they had at least two ideas to take back acknowledged that the training contained enough practical information. More than 10% of Pennsylvania libraries participated in the summer lunch program. We were not able to collect how many libraries partnered with an existing food site to provide programming.
