State Project Code: 40-8539
Start Date: 07/01/2015
End Date: 06/30/2016
Abstract: The Yorba Linda Public Library’s “Unplugged: A Music Lending Library” supported community members of all ages by providing access to materials and resources not common to traditional library services or available locally. The Music Lending Library added 256 sheet music compilation books, four (4) acoustic guitars, four (4) ukuleles, and music related materials and resources to our collection. The Library supplemented the new alternative lending collection with music-themed events including basic guitar and ukulele instruction, an A cappella performance, and a saxophone performance; offering community members of all ages the opportunity to enhance their lifelong learning skills. Community connections flourished as community members had access to resources and a location to meet, develop, and appreciate the musical arts together.

Title: Bring Your Own Instrument
Narrative: Community members were invited to bring their own instrument and learn the basics of how to play their instrument with formal instruction from professional musicians. The Library held three (3) acoustic guitar sessions for adults with an instructor from one of our community partners, The Music Lab. In addition, the Library held four (4) ukulele sessions with in-kind funds. Three of the sessions were held for adults instructed by Jack Ehlers, a Yorba Linda resident and owner of UkeLifeCo. One session was held for teens and led by Teen Advisory Board member and ukulele enthusiast Gabby M.

Title: Music Performances
Narrative:

Over the course of the grant cycle the Library held seven (7) musical performance programs and one (1) educational presentation. Performances included education on origins of instruments, historical use and development in modern music.  One of the more popular sessions was with bagpiper Eric Rigler. Eric, who was a bagpiper on the soundtrack for Brave Heart, provided a wonderful history of the bagpipe interspersed with his performance. During his performance he alternated between his Irish and Scottish bagpipes. He spoke about the differences between the bagpipes, the various countries that bagpipes can be found in, and how bagpipes are made.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
Surveys were conducted at each of the events and a total of 178 program participants completed the survey. Of the 178 survey respondents 166 or 93% responded that as a result of attending the music event they have increased their knowledge of music. Music appreciation increased significantly by attending the various music themed events offered in conjunction with Unplugged: A Music Lending Library. Ninety-one percent of the 178 survey participants agreed as a result of attending an event, their music appreciation increased. Patrons checking out sheet music were surveyed in regards to the circulating new sheet music collection. The Library received responses from one hundred and forty patrons. Eighty three patrons or 59% responded that they loved the sheet music collection so much they came back for additional sheet music compilation books. Forty percent of respondents were first time users.
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
Yorba Linda community members’ knowledge, attitude, and behavior changed for the better as a result of Unplugged: A Music Lending Library. Patrons gained a better understanding of the various musical genres, instruments played, and composers’ works demonstrated during the events. Patrons' attitude and appreciation of music, as well as their desire to utilize the services the library offers, greatly increased as a result of attending our library programs. An improved perception of music and Library resources helps promote life-long learning, creativity, and emotional awareness. One patron commented, “How special it was to have such a talented musician here at our Yorba Linda Library” after bagpiper’s Eric Rigler performance. Providing sheet music for our community generated a change in behavior for patrons. They began to utilize the Library as their resource for sheet music instead of finding it through other sources. More than 50% of patrons utilized the sheet music collection more than once, clearly making the Library a new destination for their sheet music needs.

Survey
Review of Administrative Data
Based on outputs, outcomes and/or other results, explain any significant lessons learned from these findings for either the SLAA or others in the LIS field:
Unplugged: A Music Lending Library greatly improved user’s life-long learning skills as well as lead to a more well-balanced and thriving community through the provision of an artistic outlet. The musical instruments kits for the entire grant cycle could rarely be found in the Library. Instead they were constantly being used by patrons to continue in their musical journey or learn a new instrument. Within the second month of launching the musical instruments kits, the Library had to reallocate grant funds to purchase an additional two ukulele kits. The demand was so great for them the wait list was over a year long. The musical events were extremely well received. The change in behavior, attitude, and knowledge was overwhelmingly positive and definitely worth the time, effort, and expenses to plan and execute the events. A few lessons learned from the findings over the course of the grant cycle include which demographics were best served by the various services offered. Adults were an ideal population to target for basic instrument instruction classes. Adults had a little more free time to begin the process of learning a new instrument and preferred the more personal interaction with an instructor. Furthermore, the ukulele instruction classes had higher attendance than the guitar instruction courses. Patron’s felt it was easier to learn to play the ukulele in a short time frame, than a guitar. In regards to sheet music, teens took full advantage of the new collection which had increased tenfold. They are enthusiastic about the wide variety of genres, composers, and instruments available including selections they could use for a school project, an audition, or simply to learn a song from their favorite video game.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort:
Yes: The Library has committed to provide portions of its collection development budget to continue the growth and sustainability of the sheet music collection and nonfiction music titles in its next fiscal year budget. In addition, the Library received strong financial assistance from the Friends of the Library, who will continue to support the well-received and very successful music themed events and the musical instrument kits maintenance. Finally, the Library will continue to work with our project partners such as the LA Opera to provide ongoing educational music events.
Do you anticipate any change in the project's scope:
Yes: The Library will scale down the scope of the growth of the project with the end of the grant cycle. The Library will continue to maintain and grow the sheet music collection, just on a smaller scale. Instead of acquiring 15-25 sheet music compilation books each month the Library will acquire at least 5-10 new sheet music compilation books. Musical performances and events will continue to take place at the Library. There are already two musical events planned for the fall. In winter 2017 the "Bring Your Own Instrument" ukulele sessions will return, due to the high number of requests and positive feedback from community members.
