General Information
Title: Training in New Technologies for Self-Directed Learners and Library Class Instruction
State Project Code: 4100069306
Start Date: 01/15/2015
End Date: 08/31/2015
Abstract:

The Library has expanded access to technology training and resources to enable residents to increase their technology skills for personal fulfillment and job preparedness.  This was accomplished by several means.  A subscription to Lynda.com was purchased to provide an online resource for self-directed learning on a wide variety of technology topics for different skill levels.

The offering of technology training classes in the library was expanded to include intermediate/advanced levels of classes on Microsoft Word and Excel taught by library staff.  Classes on digital photography, videography, and website design were  taught by outside instructors.  To facilitate the in-library classes, 6 laptop computers plus licenses for Microsoft Office 13, Photoshop Elements 13, and Premiere Elements 13 were purchased.

When the computers are not in use for classes, they are available for public use in the library.

State Goal: Create opportunities for libraries to enhance their capacity to provide 21st Century resources, services and programs to their communities.

Project Outcomes
Project Outcomes
List any important findings or outcomes from your project:
97% of people taking classes in the library and 100% of Lynda.com users report and increase in level of skill in chosen subject (library staff are included among the responders using Lynda.com) 87% of all learners reported they gained personal achievement and enjoyment 50% of all learners acquired skills useful in their current job and 33% acquired skills needed to gain employment 88% of learners indicated they are very likely to take other classes in the library or on Lynda.com while 6% are somewhat likely. (6% did not answer the question)
Please briefly describe importance of findings:
People have increased their personal and job-related technology skills and are better equipped to navigate the technology-rich environment of the 21st century. People are meeting their personal goals for life-long learning People are better qualified for employment and more proficient in the use of technology in their current jobs People will continue to turn to the library as their resource for life-long learning and continue to increase their technology skills
What methods did you use to determine your findings? Check all that apply:
Survey
Based on outputs, outcomes and/or other results, explain any significant lessons learned from these findings for either the SLAA or others in the LIS field:
Online survey for Lynda.com needed to be more specific to provide better response options for people who were browsing and planned to return but had not yet started course work.
Do you anticipate continuing this project after the current reporting period ends:
Yes
Do you anticipate any change in level of effort:
No
Do you anticipate any change in the project's scope:
No
Do you anticipate any other changes in the project:
Yes: We will continue to expand our in-library technology class offerings. We are introducing a new class on Microsoft PowerPoint beginning in October. A new digital photography class with a different focus is scheduled this fall. We used the surveys distributed at in-library classes to ask students about their interests in other technology programs and will use those responses to direct our future class offerings.
